Tom ( The Westie's) Story

My name is Becky Tucker, and I am one of the co-founders of Heartland Westie Rescue, Inc. We are a small West Highland White Terrier rescue group trying to service Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas. We also have a representative in Illinois and Nebraska. In May of 1998, Heartland reps. attended a puppymill "close out" sale in Lebanon, MO. With the help of our internet friends, most of whom we had never met in person, we were able to raise $3,000 in one week and purchased 3 adults and three puppies. The oldest dog we purchased was named MacIntosh B.J. He was 12.5 years old, filthy, nasty smelling, and severely matted. He was the very last dog of the entire auction! They threw him up on a table and tried to start the bid at $100.00. They said he was old, and wouldn't "perform" on his own, but could be "A.I.'d" just fine. No one in the entire place bid, so Heartland offered $50 because we knew he was facing certain doom. My husband decided "the old man" wasn't going any further than our house. The last thing I wanted was a 13 year old dog that wasn't house trained and was afraid of everything. My husband was very firm about his decision. He made up his mind that B.J. was going to know the luxuries our own dogs had know. We referred to him so frequently as the old man, that he became know as T.O.M. T.O.M. became the poster child of westie rescue nation wide. We received donations from as far away as New Zealand. Everyone wanted daily updated about T.O.M. Sadly, in December of 1998 he contracted a sever fungal infection. With his failing health, a deadly bacterial infection set in also. He life ended on February 1, 1999. The entire westie world was saddened by his death. My husband and I are still in mourning over him, but we have dedicated our lives to westie rescue.
